The learned Kau Yuk-lui in the capital is famous for his painting of phoenix. Chuk Lan-chi, daughter of the top millionaire in town, goes to the Lantern Carnival to search for his painting. She encounters Kau there. The two fall in love with each other at first sight but they have no chance to introduce themselves before they part. They miss one another thereafter. Chuk's father wants his daughter to marry into the royal family so as to elevate the family status. Chuk promises to do accordingly if her father can buy one of Kau's phoenix paintings. Chuk's father is keen to get the painting but he fails every time he tries. When Kau learns that Chuk's daughter is the lady he encounters in the Carnival, he agrees to paint for Chuk's father, so that he can approach Chuk.
When they meet, they express their love for one and other but are discovered by Chuk's father. The father blames his daughter and drives the learned Kau out. After they have been separated, they miss one another so much that they have the same dream that they have a date the next year in the Lantern Carnival. They are not sure whether the dream will come true or not. On the fifteenth of the Lunar New Year next year, they go for their dream date and meet each other beneath the lantern. Chuk's father no longer opposes to their marriage and the lovers finally get married.
