Hong Kong in 1949 was a city in turbulence. The People's Republic was established on the mainland of China in the fall of that year. As a result, a surge of immigrants flooded into the British colony.
Not all of the immigrants were honest, law-abiding citizens. Criminal triads came to regard Hong Kong as their new headquarters. The communist leaders of the People's Republic wanted the triads (who opposed their leadership) stomped out.
And this historical setting provides the backdrop for a fascinating look at the triads (taking place during roughly the same period of history as The Godfather).
Directed by Poon Man-Kit, who also made the well-regarded To Be Number One (which made Ray Lui a star), Lord of East China Sea (also starring Lui), and Shanghai Grand.
