The Potala Palace, a world known place with age old history and legendry, was said to have been built in the 7th century during the reign of King Songtsan Gambo and was rebuilt in 17th century by Dalai Lama V.Having been reconstructed and restored many times, the Potala emerges as a building with great magnificence and splendour and has great significance in Tibetan history.
As a former residence of Dalai Lama, it contains a remarkable large number of historical, artistic monuments as well as convincing proofs of present day developments.
With five years dedicated work, Mr.Chen Zhen of CCTV has made the first full length documentary film about this building, "The Potala Palace", in order to reveal the long history and splendid culture of the Tibetans. This film will provide us with a rare chance to get to know more about Xizang (Tibet) and to reflect upon the important issues how to re-appreciate our historical and cultural achievements and the relations of the Past (history),the Present(existence) and Future (development) triangle. It is told through the eyes of someone who entered the Potala at the age of 13 and lived there for 60 years, experiencing personally the rise and fall of its fortunes during this long period.
This artistic documentary film "Potala Palace" will be transmitted or broadcasted as a special program on CCTV at prime time and will be shown simultaneously in cinemas at home and abroad soon.
The Potala Palace is on the Red Hill in Lhasa, capital of Tibet. 117meters high, 370 meters long and 370 wide with 13 storeys of over 1000 rooms. In 1994 it was declared a United Nations World Cultural Heritage site.
