In the 60's of the New China, the rural village was still in great poverty Man-tang (Poon Chi-man), the husband of Shui-xi(Fung Bo-bo) went to Hong Kong alone to make a living and soon lost all contacts with his family Shui-xi therefore took her three children to Hong Kong to find his husband. Upon her arrival, she discovered that her husband had already married with another woman, Nai-xin (Wu Mei-yee). Nai-xin initially pretended to accept Shui-xi and her children to live under the same roof but indeed was always seeking a chance to sort them out.
Man-tang was still dissatisfied with his boating business and ended up heavily in debt. He then escaped to Taiwan. Thanks to Shui-xi's excellence in her needlework, the family passed safety through its financial plight. After such a drastic change in the family, the eldest son, Guo-xing (Marco Lo) became a fame-seeking and practical person. The eldest daughter. Guo-hui (Tin Yui-lee), decided to leave the declining family by marrying an aged rich man. Shui-xi tried to disunited Guo-gui but consequently deepened their misunderstanding.
