Prince Rudolph , son of Emperor Franz-Joseph , is heir to throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire . He is unhappily married . By chance , he meets Maria Vetsera and soon they fall in love . Having learned of this love affair , the Emperor exiles Maria back to Vienna . After renouncing his claim to the throne , Rudolph asks asylum with Maria in France . The Emperor blocks the request . In despair , Rudolph leads Maria to a hunting lodge at Mayerling where the two lovers seal their tryst in a part of death.
